The ashwath katte as a neighbourhood community space supports different kinds of social, religious, economic and other activities. We have found that ashwath kattes have acted as our commons and been places for human interaction for decades. We think the katte has the potential to generate community bonding and needs to be safeguarded from rapid urbanization . This is the story of a public space in Bangalore. Which public space in your neighbourhood is most popular? How would you like to protect this space? If you have some thoughts on why some places work better for community bonding, please do share. #peepultree #treeworship #peepultreeshrines #ashwathkatte #decodingeveryday #everydaycity #everydaycitylab #bangalorediaries #bangaloretrees #communitybonding #community

Every public space is unique by itself and functions differently according to its context, giving it a unique identity. We have been thinking about how a space gets its identity. In our research, we had found that the identity for the ashwath katte at Sirsi circle in Bangalore comes from it being located at the “circle” that indica ted the beginning of Mysore road. Public spaces seem to work at the intersection between the built environment and the social life. In the case of an ashwath katte, its identity can come from the canopy of the Peepul tree and its shade-giving quality, from the religious, social or economic activities that are carried out around it. It can also come from the ritualistic objects at the ashwath katte - the sacred thread or the framed deities at the base of the tree. For instance, at the katte at Bisulu Mariamma temple in Doddamavalli, the identity of the space comes from the serpent stones. In your neighbourhood community space, what do you think are the elements or activities that determine its identity? #peepultree#treeworship#peepultreeshrines#ashwathkatte#decodingeveryday#everydaycity#publicsafety#everydaycitylab #bangalorediaries #bangaloretrees #keystonespecies #roadsideshrines #neighbourhoods #communityspaces #publicspaces

We think it is important to make public spaces safe for both men and women, for people from all age groups, and to make our streets and public spaces into places of comfort that can be used by anyone – office-goers, home-makers, college students and school children. To better understand how comfortness and safety can be achieved in public spaces we read about this a bit. We found that in public spaces around the world the safety factors usually include good visibility and lighting on footpaths, access to public transport, clear signages, maintenance of trees so that they do not block lamp-posts, and so on. What do you think makes a street or public space safe? If you could tell us about a street/public space where your experience was comfortable/enjoyable or one where you felt unsafe, we’d like for us to collate these experiences to arrive at what works best for most of us in Indian cities. #peepultree #treeworship #peepultreeshrines #ashwathkatte #decodingeveryday #everydaycity #publicsafety #everydaycitylab #safeplaces #bangalorediaries #bangaloretrees
